Both fixture types cover the photosynthetically active spectrum. The difference is control: a full-spectrum fixture emits a fixed recipe, while a multi-channel fixture lets you change the recipe. Choosing between them depends on how much value spectral control adds to your operation.
How full-spectrum fixtures work
A full-spectrum fixture combines white LEDs — usually in the 3000–4000K range — with deep red and often blue diodes to produce a broad spectrum that supports the whole crop cycle. The recipe is fixed at the factory: efficient, simple and predictable, with strong results across vegetative and flowering stages for most crops.
How multi-channel fixtures work
Multi-channel fixtures split the spectrum into separately driven bands — deep red, far-red, blue and white — each dimmable independently. Growers can shift the spectrum between growth stages, run far-red for photoperiod effects, or execute side-by-side spectrum trials to find the recipe that maximizes yield or quality for their specific cultivar.
Where each one fits
- Full spectrum: single-crop commercial rooms, greenhouses and any operation prioritizing simplicity and cost per µmol.
- Multi-channel: cannabis production, research programs, breeding trials and facilities running different crops or cultivars in the same room.
- Hybrid approach: full-spectrum base lighting with a small number of multi-channel fixtures reserved for trials.
Cost and complexity trade-offs
Multi-channel fixtures carry a price premium and add control complexity — more channels to program, more failure points, and a controller layer to maintain. For operations that will never change their recipe, that premium buys little. For operations that treat spectrum as a production variable, it is the difference between guessing and measuring.
A practical middle path used by many commercial growers: standardize on full-spectrum fixtures for production rooms, and install multi-channel units in a dedicated trial room to validate recipes before rolling them out facility-wide.
